In recent news Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative named Beth Koigi one of five Laureates in 2023 for her exceptional work and innovation towards providing clean water to those in need. She has worked tirelessly for 16 years to develop technology that would change the lives of thousands across Kenya and beyond. Koigi grew up in Limuru, Kenya surrounded by lush greenery and regular precipitation.

When she began attending her university in eastern Kenya, she was exposed to the arid regions of her country for the first time and made the decision to take action. Koigi completed her undergraduate education in water and filtration systems. During a drought in the late 2010s, the areas she was working in no longer had enough water to filter.

Beth took initiative by starting her social enterprise “Majik Water” and she engineered water condensation technology that would pull water from humid air and condense it into usable water. Since the beginning of the drought, Beth and Majik Water have been able to provide numerous communities experiencing water scarcity clean, usable water in a sustainable way.

Her innovation and drive is inspiring and perfectly aligned with the message we try to relay here at Auryu. I think Beth is a genius and when I was hearing about her story for the first time I immediately thought back to my freshman year of college living in the dorms. My roommate Amy and I had a dehumidifier that would always fill up in an hour or two.

Now I certainly cannot recommend drinking dorm-room-air-water or using it in any way, but in water-scarce areas the quality of the air and water are much safer than those on the ninth floor of Adams Hall in Oklahoma.

I’m really looking forward to hearing more in the future about the growth of Majik Water and how impactful Beth’s innovations are.
